Lab Mission
Our lab is a part of the United States Geological Survey's Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit located at Iowa State University. We focus on conducting applied research to inform science-based conservation and management of aquatic species populations and their habitats in a changing world. We work alongside partners at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, USGS, Iowa State University, the Wildlife Management Institute, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. We also emphasize mentorship, professional development, and education of our students and team members as well as effective science communication to relevant stakeholders.

Research Interests and Philosophy
- Our lab works in understanding the biotic and abiotic factors including land use, harvest, inter-species predation and competition, and climate change that shape aquatic ecosystems across multiple spatial scales.
- We work on various taxonomic groups and environments but specialize in fish and crayfish ecology and conservation and habitat management in rivers and streams.
- We adopt a "growth mindset" that encourages us to accept challenges, receive constructive feedback, and reflect on our academic and professional journeys.
- We create an inclusive and welcoming community of practice for all members to work in an atmosphere of mutual support and respect. For more information on our how our lab works towards these goals see our code of conduct.
